II. In Our Backyard

Opposition to the Reagan administration support of dictatorships in Central America was active and lively. Inspired by the assassination of activist Salvadorean Archbishop Romero, a priest named Cuchulain Moriarity turned his church over to the sanctuary of Central American refugees. Casa El Salvador on 24th Street helped organize actions against U.S. intervention, and gave moral support to the FMLN coalition (and its guerillas) in that nation.

Demonstrations were frequent, large and festive. At one against Salvadorean President Duarte, an embarassed policeman's gun bounced out of his holster and into the gutter as he pursued a demonstrator; I've always been sorry that I returned it.
